You: good night

Bond lengths, Bond Dipoles

Bond lengths follow the expected trend that bonds between larger atoms are longer and bonds between smaller atoms are smaller.

Duh.

Fat people (larger atoms) have to have longer arms if they want to wrap them around their equally fat partners.

- But bond strength and bond length are inversely related!  A short bond is generall shorter than a long one.

Why? (Bond Dipole)

Fat people get sick of the effort they have to make to keep each other in their arms.  It’s too much work so they go look for other people to love.

Not so fat people can keep their arms around each other all day and not get tired.

So fat people tend to have weaker bonds and not-so-fat people have stronger bonds.  ( Plus, they’re harder to pull apart than fat people ^___^ )

Bond Dipoles:

Goodie two shoes are attracted to badasses, just like how

Electrons are polarized toward more electronegative atoms.

Gay atoms C-C and F-F have no bond dipoles.

C-F bonds are stronger than them (more electronegative - C has partial positive charge, F partial negative charge).

Straight bonds have nuclei closer than the sum of their atomic radii because of coulombic attraction between charged ends. (ionicish)

Covalent Bonding & Bond Strength & Homo[sexual]atomic Bonds

Covalent: bonding between two of the same kind.

Unlike ionic bonding where bonds are created between opposites (according to Coulomb’s law) to balance each other out and reach stability, covalent bonds are bonds in which atoms share electrons to both reach stability.

Unlike Li & F, covalent bonding atoms have relatively similar levels of electronegativity.

They share their negativity to keep each other alive and more stable like two emo kids helping each other out.

Weak bonds are easily broken and molecules with such bonds are fairly reactive.

Strong, unbreakable couples v. couples willing to cheat.

Strong bonds are hard to break and give rise to stable molecules.

So we define bond strength by how easy it is to break them apart!  ^_______^

Homoatomic bonds: bonds between atoms of the same element (see, homosexual bond def.)
Homosexual bonds: n. bonds between lovers of the same sex.

Bonds are strongggg - takes a lot to break them apart (hell, they even travel to different states to get married)

But going across a row in the periodic table, the trend in bond strength may not be regular.  Li-Li>Be-Be<B-B<C-C<N-N>O-O>F-F

(N-N has triple bonds, O-O double, F-F single) - same with period 3.

Love & Ionic Bonding

He, Ne, and Ar are never found bonded to other atoms in nature.

Noble gases are special in their closed shell electron configurations.  Since there’s no room for more love, they don’t accept any more negative species into their lives.

Their nucleuses are so positive, the loss of the electrons they already have is unfavorable.

Noble gases don’t want to do anything at all - unreactive to temptations.

Noble gases are like content lovers.

Non-noble gases have open shell configurations.  They’re lonely and emotionally unstable, so they try to form bonds to feel whole like noble gases.

ex. Depressing Li and Freakishly happy F meet.  Li tries to bond with F by sharing her depressing life stories and introducing F to her depressing counterparts.

As a result: Li gets closer to emotional stability by losing some baggage, and F gets more balanced out by being less overly happy about everything in the world.

Li becomes more positive and F becomes less too-positive.

Chemistry

Chemical Bonding:

Bond length, Bond strength, Bond dipole

Ionic

Greater electronegativity; stronger bonds
Large difference; farther apart on periodic table
Coulomb’s law: opposites attract ~ the greater the charge difference, the greater the oppositeness and attraction, meaning… stronger bonds

Covalent

Weaker bonds
Closer together on the periodic table

Bond Dipole means electronegativity potential - some atoms are more attractive and charismatic to electrons than others.
